How can you model successful people?
Let’s take a step back… Firstly, what is modelling?
In a busy, stressful world, it can be easy to lose sight of what you admire and aspire to be.
You can reconnect with some of the qualities that mean the most to you by being aware of what you admire in others and modelling this, which is a positive thing.
Modelling is the process of recreating excellence
It is about you observing how someone else has achieved the outcomes you desire in your life and relationships and you then modelling this journey of excellence.
However, modelling excellence is not about merely copying a person’s behaviour.
And it is not an attempt to be someone you’re not.
Rather it is simply choosing to apply the strategies a person uses, through you understanding how their thought processes, beliefs, values and actions which enable them to achieve their goals, dreams and desires.
These awe inspiring people know that excellence is a journey, not a destination. They’re always raising the bar and strive to be successful in everything they do.
They don’t have some special gift that you don’t have, they’re not any more loved than you are now loved.
They haven’t had a tougher life, worked harder or waited longer than you and they’re not “luckier” or have it easier than you.
Their success and happiness depended upon none of these things. It arrived simply because they expected it to arrive and then lived their lives accordingly.
Some people choose to model excellence of famous people with a “rags to riches” or hardship story such as J.K. Rowling who lived on welfare benefits before creating the Harry Potter franchise. Before Sam Walton founded Wal-Mart, he milked cows and sold magazines in Oklahoma and Oprah Winfrey turned a life of hardship into inspiration for a multi-billion-dollar empire.
Some people choose to model sports personalities (Michael Jordan was actually cut from his high school basketball team but is often acclaimed as the best basketball player of all time) or musicians (The Beatles when they were just starting out, were told no by a recording company).
Some people choose to model famous people who made a humanitarian difference such as Martin Luther King, Jr or there is Oscar-winning actress Angelina Jolie who has become involved in promoting humanitarian causes and was recognised and named a UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador.
Sound like something you would like to give a go?
If so, here are 3 STEPS TO MODEL SUCCESSFUL PEOPLE:
Step 1: Choose someone to model
Take a moment to ask yourself if there is a person whose way of life is worth emulating and creating your own version of it to achieve your personal goals?
Is there a person who:
-
- Inspires you?
- You admire for having a clear vision and for then throwing their whole heart into making it a reality?
- Took and continues to take action with unwavering ambition and faith?
- In your eyes, has set a standard of excellence?
It doesn’t necessarily have to be a famous person who you choose to model either. Is there someone you could model who is part of your life? Is there a family member, friend or a work colleague / business associate who inspires you to follow in their footsteps?
Step 2: Qualities
List at least 5 qualities you admire the most about them and why.
Step 3: Action
List at least 3 actions you can take this week to model their standard of excellence.
Look into the actions they have taken to be at the top of their game, the actions they have taken that have now made a real difference in their lives. How can you use this to motivate you to achieve your goals, dreams and desires?
Remember, this is not necessarily imitating their particular passion, goal and dream, as it’s important to follow your own passions and to be original. Instead, set it upon yourself to understand the steps they took to achieve their goals, dreams and desires and use this to CREATE YOUR BEST LIFE!!!
