How To Be People Smart

How To Be People Smart

A question for you: Are you being people smart?

Over the years, I’ve learnt how vital it is to protect myself from negative energy that can show up in my connections with others and to build myself a circle of trusted friends and allies, where we can share our successes, happiness and grow together positively!

As a result, it helps to keep me in high vibes and feeling vibrant! #YourVibeAtrractsYourTribe

Sometimes, whether we realise it or not, there are people in our lives, who seem to deplete us and sap our energy.

Have you taken time to sit back and really consider who you’re surrounding yourself with?

Are all of your connections healthy ones for you or are they toxic?

Furthermore…

Do they bring you joy and happiness?

Over time, the dynamics of our connections can change. Why? Because we, as individuals, change. We grow, we develop. For this reason, we’re not the same person we were 1, 5, 10, 15 years ago or even yesterday. Our interests and needs change. Likewise, our values and beliefs change…

And that’s absolutely okay! Because, your life is your party and you’re creating your reality.

Also, as we grow, we become clearer on the type of person we want to be and our values. Consequently, this may result in you drifting apart from some people, getting closer to others and welcoming new, like-minded people into your life.

I came across a concept which is an analogy for the four acting forces on an aeroplane, a few years ago by Ed JC Smith who is an incredible human being, an entrepreneur, psychologist, founder of the Champion Academy and that’s just to name of the many “hats” he wears. This concept can help you become “people smart” about who you have within your life.

The 4 types of people to be aware of are like flying… Lift, Thrust, Weight and Drag:

LIFTS: Those who LIFT US UP, brighten our day & make us feel good! 😊

THRUSTS: Those who THRUST US FORWARD by helping us to break through “barriers”, inspiring and motivating us 🎉

WEIGHTS: Those who WEIGH US DOWN and after being around them we feel disheartened or negative about life 😔

DRAG: Those who DRAG US BACK, with a constant miserable or self-pity story expecting us to cheer them up 😣

Jim Rohn, a renowned businessman and personal development guru, said:

“You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with”

Therefore, here are 3 steps to be “people smart” by ensuring you are surrounding yourself with people who can have a positive influence on your behaviour, attitude and results:

Step 1: Grab a piece of paper, pen and draw 4 columns headed up: ‘Lift’ in 1st column, ‘Thrust’ in 2nd, ‘Weight’ in the 3rd and ‘Drag’ in the 4th column

Step 2: Think about the people you spend the most time with or engage with regularly or at some points in your life… this can be family, friends, your partner, business contacts, colleagues and then decide which category each person fits into and write their name in the relevant column

Step 3: Decide how you can spend less or more time with those people or how you can invest less or more energy in them

Perhaps it would be beneficial to have a conversation with the “Weights” and “Drags” to express how you feel.  WATCH: How to HAVE DIFFICULT CONVERSATIONS YouTube Video

Or, if you have to spend time with them, what can you do to make that experience more pleasurable? For example, is there an activity you can do together that you both enjoy?

Certainly, there are learnings from each person we encounter, which ultimately, we can leverage for our growth in life!

Finally remember… This is your party and you deserve to have the best people there!
